Dowel Chair
Cardboard Paper Pulp
This chair is part of an ongoing material exploration with recyled cardboard paper pulp. Cardboard boxes
are ubiquitious across the globe, and I am interested in finding new ways the material can be utilized beyond
its role as a shipping container.
By limiting myself to using only cardboard (no additives or armatures) I developed new processes
for manipulating the material to perform structurally. Inspired by traditional woodworking techniques,
the chair features mortis and tenon joinery with dowels that were formed on a lathe. The chair has high compression strength, a unique fuzzy texture, and is lightweight.
At the end of it’s life, I returned it back into pulp and made a new piece of furniture from the select batch of pulp. Through this process, I hope to demonstrate a circular approach to furniture, ownership, and resources.
